Why this site exists

Almost every helmet roundup online ranks helmets on comfort, noise and looks, and treats the certification — the only objective safety information you get before you crash — as a footnote, if it appears at all. We think that's backwards. So we put the DOT, ECE 22.06, Snell and SHARP marks in the first column of every table, cite them, and let you decide.

The one thing we do that others don't

Here's the insight that started the site: a flagship helmet's US version is frequently a different homologation than its European namesake, sometimes under a different name. The Arai Tour-X5 is sold in the US as the XD-5 (DOT + Snell, not ECE 22.06). The US Shoei Neotec 3 is a DOT build; the European one is ECE 22.06 and 5/5 SHARP. The glowing review you read may not be of the helmet on the shelf in front of you. We tell you which mark is actually on the US box — every time. It's all laid out in the certification pillar.

Who writes it

Reviews and guides on Visor & Vent are written and edited by Stephen V., editor, visor & vent. Stephen is an enthusiast who's genuinely into motorcycle gear — someone who reads the manuals, compiles the published specs, cites the certification and does the math. No lab coat, no test rig, and we'll always tell you which is which.

We are deliberately clear about what we are not. We are not a test lab. We do not have crash equipment, we have not drop-tested these helmets, and we are never going to write "in our testing" as though we did. Helmets we claim to have crash-tested ourselves: zero— and we would rather publish that plainly than borrow a credential we don't have. What we do instead is on the methodology page, in detail.

How we're funded
