When to Replace a Motorcycle Helmet
The five-year guideline is real, but it is widely misread as a hard expiry date - which it is not. Here is what actually ages inside a helmet, the one event that means replace it today, and how to tell honest guidance from fake urgency.

Ask when to replace a motorcycle helmet and you will get one number back: five years. It is sound, widely repeated guidance - and it is also one of the most misunderstood rules in motorcycling, sold by some corners of the internet as a hard expiry date that turns a good helmet into a deathtrap the morning it turns five. That is not how any of this works. Here is the honest version: where the five-year figure comes from, what genuinely degrades inside a helmet over time, the one event that means replace it no matter its age, and how to read the date stamp so you actually know how old yours is.
The five-year guideline, and where it comes from
The Snell Memorial Foundation and most major manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet about five years after its date of manufacture under normal use. That is a guideline, not a legal expiry, and it is built on a sensible worst-case assumption: a helmet in regular service collects sweat, sunscreen, hair oils, UV exposure and the slow compression of its padding, and five years is a reasonable point to stop trusting a lid that has lived a full riding life. The key phrase is "normal use." Snell is explicit that a helmet stored in good condition and never worn does not automatically expire on a five-year timer - the recommendation is a judgment call about wear, not a countdown printed at the factory.
What actually ages - and it is not the shell
It helps to know what you are actually replacing, because the intuition that "the plastic gets old and cracks" is mostly wrong. The outer shell - polycarbonate, fiberglass composite or carbon - is the most stable part of the helmet and is not what the five-year clock is really about. What ages is everything working with it:
- The EPS liner. The dense expanded-polystyrene foam is the part that actually manages a crash by crushing to absorb energy. Repeated heat cycles, body heat and time can make it slightly stiffer and less able to crush progressively the way its certification test assumed.
- The adhesives and bonding. A helmet is layers - shell, EPS, comfort liner - held together with glues that slowly lose their grip over years of temperature swings inside a hot garage or a sun-baked topbox.
- The comfort liner and cheek pads. This is the biggest practical one. Padding packs down and absorbs years of sweat, so an old helmet fits looser than it did new - and a loose helmet can shift or roll in a crash, undoing the fit the safety test depended on. - The retention system.The chin strap webbing and the buckle or D-rings are what keep the helmet on your head. Straps fray and stretch and hardware wears, and none of the shell's strength matters if the helmet leaves your head on the first impact.
The one non-negotiable: replace after any impact
Age is a guideline; impact is a rule. If a helmet takes a significant hit - a crash, or a hard drop onto a solid surface from height with the helmet unworn - replace it, even if it looks perfect and even if it is a month old. The EPS liner does its job by crushing, and that crush is a one-time event: the foam that absorbed a blow is now compressed and cannot absorb the next one, and the damage is usually invisible from the outside because the shell springs back while the liner underneath does not. A visible crack in the shell is an obvious replace, but the absence of a visible crack is not an all-clear. When in doubt after a real impact, retire it.
How to read the manufacture date
To apply the five-year guideline you need to know how old your helmet actually is - not when you bought it, which can be a year or more after it was made. Nearly every helmet carries a date of manufacture, usually in one of a few places: stamped or printed on a small label under the comfort liner or cheek pads, molded into the EPS foam itself, or printed on the chin strap. It is often a month-and-year stamp or a date code, and on many helmets it sits near or on the certification label. Peel back the liner and look before you assume a helmet is "a few years old" - people routinely over- or under-estimate by years.
How to make a helmet last its five years
You can slow most of what ages a helmet with basic care, and it costs nothing. Heat is the enemy of the EPS liner and the adhesives, so do not leave a helmet baking in the sun on a mirror or shut in a hot topbox all summer - store it somewhere cool and out of direct light. Do not hang it by the chin strap on a peg or a bar end, which stretches the webbing and can press a dent into the liner against a hard point; set it down on its crown or use a shelf or a helmet bag. Clean the shell and visor with mild soap and water rather than solvents, gasoline or ammonia glass cleaner, which can attack the finish and, on some shells, the plastic itself. And never repaint a helmet with hardware-store paints or apply stickers whose solvents you cannot vouch for. None of this makes a helmet immortal, but it is the difference between a lid that is honestly fine at five years and one that was quietly cooked at three.
The honest part: fake urgency versus real risk
Now the de-bunking, because you deserve it. A five-year-old helmet that has been worn normally, stored out of the sun, and never crashed is not an emergency and does not become unsafe at the stroke of midnight on its fifth birthday. The five-year figure is a prompt to inspect and think, not a detonation timer - Snell itself frames an unused, well-stored helmet as not automatically expired. Plenty of sites lean on that number to sell you a new helmet you may not need this season. What genuinely warrants replacement is clearer and more useful than a birthday:
- Any significant impact or crash - immediately, regardless of age.
- Visible damage - cracks in the shell, crushed or crumbling EPS, a frayed strap or a buckle that no longer holds firm.
- A fit gone loose - if the padding has packed down and the helmet now rocks and shifts, it no longer fits the way its test assumed, and that is a real reason to replace it well inside five years.
- An unknown history - a used helmet you cannot vouch for may have been dropped or crashed by its previous owner, so its age on paper tells you nothing.
