DOT vs ECE vs Snell vs SHARP: Helmet Certifications Explained

Four marks, four bodies, four very different levels of independence. Here is what each certification actually tests, and how to read the label before you spend money.

Every motorcycle helmet sold in the United States carries at least one certification, and most riders never look past the DOT sticker on the back. That is a mistake, because the four marks you will run into — DOT, ECE 22.06, Snell, and SHARP — are not four grades of the same test. They are four different bodies, asking four different safety questions, with wildly different levels of independence. Understanding the difference is the single most useful thing you can do before you buy a lid.

We want to be upfront: we do not crash-test helmets. Nobody reviewing helmets at consumer scale does — a proper impact test destroys the helmet and costs a fortune per sample. What we can do, and what this whole site is built around, is read the homologation printed on the shell and tell you honestly what it means. Every certification claim below is sourced to the standards body or a reputable reference, listed at the foot of the page.

The four marks at a glance

Before the detail, here is the shape of it. Notice the two columns that matter most: whether an independent lab verified the helmet, and whether the mark is even required to sell in the US.

DOT: the US legal floor

DOT is short for the US Department of Transportation standard FMVSS 218, administered by NHTSA. It is the only certification that is legally mandatory for a street helmet sold in the United States — every road-legal lid must meet it. The tests are real and meaningful: impact attenuation dropped onto flat, hemispherical and curbstone anvils, a penetration test, a retention (strap) test, and a requirement for at least 105 degrees of peripheral vision to each side.

The catch is in how compliance is verified. DOT is self-certified: the manufacturer declares that the helmet meets FMVSS 218 and applies the sticker itself. NHTSA buys helmets off the shelf and spot-checks them after the fact, but no independent lab signs off before the helmet reaches you. For reputable brands this system works well. The problem is at the bottom of the market, where counterfeit "novelty" DOT stickers are a known and documented problem — a beanie-style shell wearing a real-looking DOT sticker that would never pass the actual test. Treat DOT as a floor, not a ceiling: necessary, but the least you should accept.

It is also worth knowing what DOT does notrequire. FMVSS 218 has no rotational or oblique impact test — it measures straight-line, linear deceleration — and it does not test the visor, the chin bar of a modular in its open position, or fitted accessories. Those are exactly the gaps that ECE 22.06 and the newest Snell M2025 tests were written to close. So a DOT-only helmet can be a perfectly legitimate, well-built lid; it has simply been checked against a narrower set of crash scenarios than a helmet that adds one of the tougher marks.

ECE 22.06: the independent gold standard

The UN ECE 22.06 mark (formally UN Regulation No. 22, revision 06) is a European type-approval, and unlike DOT it is independently lab-testedbefore a helmet can be sold — with ongoing batch and production-conformity sampling to make sure later units still match the one that passed. It is not required in the United States, but it is widely regarded as the current global gold standard, and a growing number of US-market helmets carry it alongside DOT.

What makes 22.06 the one to look for is what it added over the older 22.05: a rotational (oblique) impact testthat measures the angled, twisting forces most closely linked to brain injury — something DOT and older ECE never checked. It also tests up to around 18 impact points on the shell (versus a handful before), at multiple speeds, and for the first time it tests the visor, sun visor, flip-front mechanism and pre-fitted accessories as part of the helmet rather than ignoring them. Snell M2025: the voluntary re-test, now split D and R

Snell is the odd one out — a private, independent US non-profit, the Snell Memorial Foundation, that runs its own lab. It is entirely voluntary: a manufacturer chooses to submit helmets, pays for testing, and Snell also buys samples off the shelf to verify that production helmets still meet the mark. Historically Snell has been associated with a stiffer, harder shell built to survive high-energy and repeated same-spot impacts.

The current standard, M2025 (rolling out from around October 2025), matters because Snell split it in two. M2025Dis the DOT-companion version — it keeps the stiffer-shell, high-energy, repeat-impact philosophy and is meant to sit alongside DOT and JIS. M2025Ris a new street-focused version explicitly designed to sit alongside ECE R22.06. Both add a new oblique/rotational test. Snell says it created the D/R split because ECE 22.06 is "incompatible with previous Snell standards" — the two philosophies pull in different directions, and one helmet can no longer satisfy both at once. When you see Snell on a US helmet, check whether it is the D or R variant, because they answer different questions.

SHARP: the consumer star rating, not a pass/fail

SHARP is different in kind from the other three. Run by the UK Department for Transport (with testing at TRL), it is not a legal certification at all — it is a consumer 1-to-5-star safety rating layered on top of an already ECE-approved helmet. SHARP buys helmets anonymously from retailers(so manufacturers can't cherry-pick a golden sample), then subjects each model to 32 impacts across 7 helmets, on flat and curbstone anvils, and publishes a star score.

It is genuinely useful — an independent, purchase-anonymous rating is the closest thing a shopper has to comparative crash data. But read it with two caveats. First, SHARP tests only a subsetof the helmets on sale, so "not listed" does not mean unsafe; it usually just means SHARP never bought that model. Second, and this is the trap, SHARP rates the EU-spec generation of a helmet. A four- or five-star score attached to a European model does not automatically transfer to a US-market helmet of the same name if that US version is a different homologation. We cite SHARP scores throughout the site, and we are careful to note when a star belongs to the EU build rather than the US one.

Where does MIPS fit in?

You will see "MIPS" advertised on a lot of modern helmets, and it is easy to mistake it for a certification. It is not. MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is a technology, not a standard— a low-friction layer inside the helmet that lets the shell move a few millimeters relative to your head during an angled impact, managing exactly the kind of rotational force ECE 22.06 now tests for. Think of it as one manufacturer's engineered answer to rotational injury, sitting on top of whatever certification the shell already carries.

A MIPS helmet still has to pass DOT (and, ideally, ECE 22.06 or Snell) on its own merits; the MIPS liner doesn't replace any of those marks. It is a genuine feature worth having, but treat it as a plus on top of a well-certified helmet, not as a substitute for reading the certification label.

The US-vs-EU homologation trap

Here is the single most expensive misunderstanding in helmet shopping, and the reason this site leads with certification. The same model name can be a completely different helmet depending on which continent sold it.Manufacturers routinely homologate the US version to DOT (and often Snell) while the European version of the "same" helmet carries ECE 22.06 — sometimes under an entirely different name.

Real examples that trip people up constantly: the European Arai Tour-X5 is sold in the US as the XD-5; the ECE 22.06 Arai Quantic is the US Contour-X; the Shoei RF-1400 is the European NXR2. Ride forums fill up with praise for the ECE 22.06 rating and SHARP stars of a European helmet, and a US buyer purchases the same-named lid expecting the same certification — only the US shell is a DOT + Snell build, not 22.06. Neither is "bad," but they were tested against different failure modes, and you deserve to know which one you are paying for. Whenever you shop, read the label on the actual shell in front of you, not the model reputation online. How to read the label on your own helmet

All of this is academic if you can't find the marks. On most helmets the certification information is printed on a small label sewn to the chin strap, or molded and stickered on the back of the shell. A genuine DOTmark reads "DOT FMVSS No. 218" together with the manufacturer and model — a lone "DOT" sticker with nothing else is a red flag. An ECEapproval shows a circled letter "E" with a country number and a longer approval number; on the newest helmets that number identifies the 22.06 revision. Snell helmets carry a Snell sticker inside naming the exact standard, for example M2025D or M2025R.

If a listing or a shell won't tell you plainly which standards it holds, treat that vagueness as information in itself. Reputable brands publish their homologation; the ones that don't are the ones to be cautious with, especially at the very bottom of the price range.

So what should you actually buy?

Our honest, non-alarmist take: any genuine DOT helmet from a reputable brand is a real safety device, not a toy. But if you have the choice, a helmet carrying ECE 22.06 has been independently tested against the rotational forces most tied to brain injury, which is why we treat it as the mark to prioritize. A Snell M2025R helmet is in similar company; M2025D answers the stiffer-shell, high-energy question instead. And an independent SHARPscore — read against the correct regional build — is a useful tiebreaker between two otherwise similar lids.

Notice what we are notsaying: that one mark makes another worthless. A DOT + Snell M2025D helmet and a DOT + ECE 22.06 one are both serious pieces of safety equipment that were simply optimized for different crash philosophies — stiffer-shell high-energy impacts versus rotational management across many points and speeds. The right answer depends on the helmet, the fit and the riding you do, which is why we rank by certification and tell you which question each mark answers rather than crowning a single universal winner.

The one thing we will say plainly: buy the certification you actually want on the shell in front of you, from a brand that publishes its homologation, and never trust a sticker in isolation. Which helmet certification is best: DOT, ECE, or Snell?
There is no single 'best' - they ask different questions. DOT is the US legal minimum and self-certified. ECE 22.06 is independently lab-tested and adds a rotational-impact test, which is why we treat it as the mark to prioritize. Snell M2025R sits alongside ECE 22.06, while M2025D favors a stiffer shell for high-energy repeat impacts. If you want one rule of thumb: prefer a helmet that carries genuine ECE 22.06.
Is a DOT-only helmet safe?
A genuine DOT helmet from a reputable brand meets a real, mandatory US standard and is a legitimate safety device. The caveats are that DOT is self-certified rather than independently lab-tested, and counterfeit 'novelty' DOT stickers exist on non-compliant shells. If you can choose, a helmet that also carries ECE 22.06 or Snell has been tested more thoroughly.
Does a SHARP 5-star rating apply to the US version of a helmet?
Not necessarily. SHARP rates the EU-spec generation of a helmet, tested from anonymously purchased units. If the US-market helmet of the same name is a different homologation (for example DOT + Snell instead of ECE 22.06), the SHARP star does not automatically transfer. Always match the star to the specific regional build you are buying.
