How to Measure Your Head for a Helmet
The right helmet starts with one honest number and one question most first-time buyers skip. Here is how to take the measurement, read a size chart, and find the shape that fits your head - not just your circumference.

A helmet can only do its job if it is the right size, and the right size starts with one honest number: the circumference of your head. Everything else - the brand, the certification, the price - is downstream of that measurement. Get it wrong and even a top SHARP-rated lid will shift on your head in a crash. Get it right and a certified budget helmet protects you the way its test says it should. Here is how to take the measurement, read a size chart without getting fooled, and check the one thing most first-time buyers skip entirely: head shape.
Take one measurement, and take it correctly
You are measuring the largest circumference of your skull. It is a 30-second job, but small errors here become a full size later, so it is worth doing deliberately rather than eyeballing it in front of a mirror. Work through these steps in order:
- Use a soft tailor's tape. If all you have is a rigid tape or a ruler, wrap a length of string or a phone charging cable around your head, mark where it overlaps, then lay that length flat against a ruler. A rigid tape held against a curved head reads short.
- Find the widest part of your head. Run the tape around your head about one inch - roughly two finger-widths - above your eyebrows, above the tops of your ears, and around the fullest point at the back of your skull. That path is the largest circumference, and it is the number every size chart is built around.
- Keep the tape level and snug. It should sit flat and horizontal the whole way around, not angled up toward the crown and not digging in. Snug means firm, continuous contact with your skin and hair pressed flat - not compression, and not a gap you could slip a finger through.
- Measure at least twice. Heads are not perfectly regular and tapes slip. Take the measurement two or three times, and if the numbers disagree, use the larger one. A helmet a touch loose can be padded down; one that is genuinely too small cannot be made bigger.
- Write it down in both units. Record the result in centimeters and inches. Manufacturer charts list both, and having the number in front of you stops you from rounding to whatever size the store happens to have in stock.
Match the number to the maker's chart, not a universal size
Here is the trap: there is no industry-standard "medium." A 59 cm head can be a large in one brand and a medium in another, because each manufacturer maps its own shell sizes to its own range of head measurements. The size printed on the box is a label, not a promise. Your circumference in centimeters is the real currency, so always pull up the size chart for the exact model you are considering and read your number off that specific chart - never assume last year's size, or another brand's size, carries over.
If your measurement lands right on the boundary between two sizes, the usual advice is to try the smaller one first. A new helmet's comfort padding compresses and packs down with use, so a lid that fits firmly out of the box tends to loosen to just-right, while one that feels comfortable on day one is often on its way to too loose by month six. The step most people skip: head shape
Two riders with the identical circumference can need completely different helmets, because heads are not round - they are ovals, and the direction of the oval matters. Fitters sort heads into three broad shapes, and matching yours is the difference between an all-day helmet and a headache by lunch:
- Round oval - nearly as wide side-to-side as it is long front-to-back. A helmet built for a longer shape will pinch a round-oval head at the temples and the sides.
- Intermediate oval - slightly longer front-to-back than side-to-side. This is the most common shape by a wide margin, which is why most helmets are built around it.
- Long oval - noticeably longer front-to-back than side-to-side. A helmet cut for an intermediate or round shape will press on the forehead and the back of the head while leaving gaps at the sides.
Brands lean toward shapes, and knowing the tendencies narrows your search fast. Shoei has built its reputation on nailing the intermediate-oval shape that fits the largest share of riders. Arai offers the roundest interiors of the major brands, which is why round-oval heads that get pinched everywhere else often find their first comfortable helmet there. AGV and HJC tend to run a sportier, snugger shape suited to intermediate-to-long-oval heads. These are tendencies, not rules - specific models within a brand vary - so treat them as a starting point and always confirm against the model you actually want. The pressure test: what a correct fit actually feels like
Once you have a helmet on, the tape measure is done and your hands take over. A correct fit presses firmly and evenly all the way around - the cheek pads should hug your cheeks enough to push them up slightly, and the crown liner should make continuous contact with no single hot spot. Grab the helmet and try to rotate it and rock it: your skin and scalp should move with the helmet rather than the helmet sliding over your skin. Then fasten the chin strap tight, reach behind, and try to roll the helmet forward off your head - a correctly sized helmet resists coming off. Finally, wear it for at least 20 to 30 minutes in the store. Genuine pressure points that were tolerable at first will announce themselves, and no amount of love for a paint scheme fixes a helmet that hurts. Two practical notes: try the helmet on wearing whatever you actually ride in, because prescription glasses or a thin winter balaclava both change how the shell sits, and re-run the roll-off test any time you fit thinner cheek pads - dropping to a smaller pad loosens exactly the grip the safety test depends on.
Fit is a safety decision, not a comfort one
This is the part that turns a measuring guide into a safety guide. Every helmet standard - the US DOT floor, ECE 22.06, Snell - is tested with the helmet mounted on a rigid headform, sized and positioned correctly, with the retention system fastened. The impact and retention numbers those labs publish describe a helmet that is on your head the way the test assumes it is. A helmet that is too big sits high, slides, and can shift out of position or even come off before it ever manages an impact - which means the protection you paid a certification premium for is not the protection you are actually wearing. Fit is not the soft part of the decision that comes after safety; it is the thing that makes the safety real.
