What's the difference between DOT, ECE, Snell and SHARP?
DOT (FMVSS 218) is the US legal minimum and is self-certified. ECE 22.06 is the current global gold standard, independently type-tested, and the first to test rotational impact. Snell M2025 is a voluntary independent standard favoring a stiffer shell. SHARP is the UK government's independent 1–5 star rating. Full detail in our certification pillar.
Is ECE 22.06 better than DOT or Snell?
It's the newest and most comprehensive mainstream standard, and the only one that tests rotational (oblique) impact plus modular mechanisms and fitted accessories. But Snell tests a stiffer shell for high-energy repeat impacts, which is a different, demanding philosophy. Neither is universally 'safest' — they test different failure modes.
Why does the US version of a helmet have a different certification?
Manufacturers homologate helmets differently for different markets. Many US-sold flagships are DOT or DOT + Snell builds rather than the European ECE 22.06 version — sometimes under a different name (Arai Tour-X5 becomes the XD-5; Shoei RF-1400 is the NXR2 in Europe). Is a DOT-only helmet safe?
A genuine DOT helmet from a reputable brand is safe — DOT is a real, mandatory standard. The caveats: it's self-certified, counterfeit 'novelty' DOT stickers exist, and it's a floor other standards exceed. Buy from a known brand, and consider ECE 22.06 or Snell on top.
What does P/J mean on a modular helmet?
Under ECE, P means the helmet was impact-tested with the chin bar closed, and J means it was tested open. Only a P/J modular is approved to be ridden with the chin bar up. See our modular roundup.
Can I ride any modular helmet with the chin bar up?
Only safely and legally if it's P/J homologated. A modular certified for closed use only is untested in the open position. Every modular we recommend states its P/J status.
What is SHARP and how do I use it?
SHARP is the UK government's independent testing program that buys helmets off the shelf and impact-tests them, publishing a 1–5 star score. It's the closest thing to a consumer crash rating. It tests only a subset of helmets and rates the EU-spec generation, so 'not listed' doesn't mean unsafe.
How do I know what size helmet to buy?
Measure your head circumference about an inch above your eyebrows with a soft tape and match it to the manufacturer's chart — sizes vary by brand. Our measuring guide covers it plus the head-shape check.
What is head shape and why does it matter?
Heads are round-oval, intermediate-oval or long-oval. A helmet built for the wrong shape creates pressure points that make it miserable over a day, no matter how good its certification. Arai runs rounder, Shoei intermediate, AGV and HJC sportier.
How often should I replace my helmet?
Roughly every five years from the manufacture date, or immediately after any impact — but the reasoning matters more than the number. Our replacement guide explains what actually degrades.
Do I need a helmet with Bluetooth built in?
Not necessarily. An integrated smart helmet is clean and cheap as a bundle but locks your helmet and comms together. A bolt-on intercom lets you choose the safest helmet and best comms separately. See our Bluetooth & comms roundup.
What's the difference between Mesh and Bluetooth intercoms?
Bluetooth links a fixed chain of riders and drops it if one goes out of range. Dynamic Mesh (Cardo DMC, Sena Mesh) is a self-healing network that scales to 15+ riders and re-routes as riders come and go. Mesh is worth it for group riding.
Do Cardo and Sena work together?
Across brands they connect over standard Bluetooth, so two riders on different brands can talk — but you lose the dynamic-Mesh benefits, which only work within a brand. Match your group's brand.
Are lighter helmets safer?
Not directly — certification sets the protection floor. But a lighter helmet reduces neck load in a crash and fatigue on a long ride, and riders wear a comfortable helmet more consistently. Weight is a real factor, just not the safety spec itself.
Do you crash-test the helmets you review?
No. We do not run a crash lab and we never claim to. We compile published specifications, cite each helmet's certification from the standards bodies and manufacturer homologation, cite independent testing like SHARP by name, and score against a public method. Full detail on our methodology page.

Why do your prices sometimes disappear?
