HJC RPHA 91 Review

The RPHA 91 is the helmet that makes the certification-first argument for us. It is not the quietest or best-finished modular you can buy — the Shoei Neotec 3 wins both of those. But it carries ECE 22.06 with P/J homologation and an independent SHARP 4/5score, at roughly half the Neotec's price, and the US Neotec 3 you'd pay double for is a DOT build. If you rank a helmet by the mark on the shell and the data behind it, the RPHA 91 wins its class outright.

As always: we haven't crash-tested this helmet. The certification and SHARP score come from the standards bodies, the weight and specs from HJC, and the ride impressions are aggregated from owners. Where a figure is a manufacturer claim we say so.

The P/J mark is the part that matters

A modular is only approved to be ridden with the chin bar up if it's P/J homologated — P for the closed impact test, J for the open one. The RPHA 91 carries it, which means flipping it up at a gas station or in traffic is a tested, approved configuration rather than a gamble. Not every flip-up can say that. Independent data, not just a badge

The RPHA 91's 4/5 SHARP rating is the rare case where a modular's protection has been independently measured — SHARP buys helmets off the shelf and impact-tests them, so it's not the manufacturer's word. Four of five stars on a modular is a strong result, and it's more objective safety information than most helmets at any price can show.

What you give up

Quiet, mainly. The Neotec 3 is meaningfully hushier at highway speed, and its interior and shield mechanism feel a class above. The RPHA 91's composite shell keeps weight reasonable (~1,740 g) but it's not luxurious. Who should skip it

Riders who want the plushest, quietest premium touring experience and will pay for it. And anyone whose head is a very round shape may find HJC's intermediate-oval fit tight — check our sizing guide first.
