An adventure helmet has to do three jobs a normal helmet doesn't: hold a peak in a highway crosswind, take goggles when you drop the visor, and survive being dropped on a fire road. That's the easy part to talk about. The part almost nobody prints is what certification the helmet actually holds — and in the US market, that answer is frequently not the one the brochure implies.

Here is the thing to understand before you spend $600 or $900: a flagship helmet's US version is often a different homologation than its European namesake, sometimes under a different name. The Arai Tour-X5 is sold in the US as the XD-5, and that US build is DOT + Snell, not the ECE 22.06 the European Tour-X5 carries. If the ECE 22.06 rotational-impact standard is your deciding factor, you need to know which box in front of you actually has it. We put the certification in the first column of every table for exactly this reason.

The good news: several excellent ADV helmets do carry genuine US DOT + ECE 22.06 — the Klim Krios Pro, the Scorpion EXO-AT960, the Bell MX-9 Adventure and the AGV AX9among them. And the Snell-certified options (the Arai XD-5, the Shoei Hornet X2) are not "worse" — Snell is a stricter add-on to DOT, tuned for high-energy repeat impacts. They're just answering a different question than ECE 22.06 does. Our job is to tell you which question each helmet answers, and let you decide which one matters for the riding you actually do.

How to choose an adventure helmet

Start with your road-to-dirt split. If you're 80% pavement, a road-biased ADV lid (Hornet X2, Neotec-adjacent quiet) will treat you better on the slab. If you genuinely ride off-road, prioritize weight and a peak that vents rather than lifts — the carbon Krios Pro and AGV AX9 are the class of the field there.

Then check the certification against your priorities. Want the current rotational standard? Buy a genuine ECE 22.06 helmet and confirm the label on the US unit. Want the stiffest shell for a hard get-off? A Snell build like the XD-5 is built for that. Both are legitimate; the worst outcome is paying flagship money assuming a certification the US box doesn't carry. Weight matters more than riders expect on a long day — every 200 g you save is neck fatigue you don't feel at hour six.

Is the US Arai Tour-X5 the same as the European one?
No. The US version is sold as the Arai XD-5 and is a DOT + Snell M2025D build; the European Tour-X5 is ECE 22.06 and scored 4/5 in SHARP testing. Same helmet family, different homologation and name. If you specifically want ECE 22.06 in the US, the Klim Krios Pro, Scorpion EXO-AT960, Bell MX-9 Adventure and AGV AX9 carry it.
Do I need ECE 22.06, or is DOT + Snell fine?
Both exceed the US legal minimum. ECE 22.06 adds a rotational (oblique) impact test and more impact points; Snell M2025D favors a stiffer shell for high-energy repeat impacts. Why is the peak so important on an adventure helmet?
A peak shades your eyes off-road and, on a well-designed helmet, sheds wind. On a poorly designed one it acts like a sail and tugs your head around at highway speed. Newer designs (the Arai XD-5, Klim Krios Pro) manage this far better than older peaked lids.
