Arai Contour-X Review

The Arai Contour-X (the US version of the European Quantic) is Arai's design philosophy in a sport-touring helmet: a smooth, continuous shell engineered to glance off a surface rather than catch on it, and the roundest interior of any full-face we cover. If you have a round-oval head that every other brand seems to pinch, this is very likely the most comfortable helmet on the page.

We haven't crash-tested this helmet. The certification comes from the standards body, the specs from Arai, and the ride impressions are aggregated from owners.

The certification: a US Snell build

The US Contour-X is DOT + Snell M2025. The European Quantic is the ECE 22.06 unit that scored 4/5 in SHARP testing — a different homologation than the US helmet, and a distinction we always flag. Snell favors a stiffer shell tuned for high-energy repeat impacts; it answers a different question than ECE 22.06's rotational test. If you specifically want 22.06 with independent SHARP data, the AGV K6 S is the pick. If a Snell build suits your priorities, the Contour-X is a superb one.

The shell and the fit are the story

Arai's two signatures both show up here. The glancing-off shell— smooth, with no shelves or spoilers for a surface to grab — is central to Arai's protection philosophy, not just styling. And the round interioris a genuine relief for round-oval heads; riders who've spent years fighting temple pressure in other brands often describe the Contour-X as the first helmet that simply fit. The finish is impeccable, as you'd expect at the price.

The honest cons: no sun visor, premium price, long-oval fit

There's no drop-down sun visor— Arai keeps the shell clean, so you commit to a clear or tinted shield or carry a spare. It's premium-priced, among the most expensive helmets we cover. And that round shape is a double-edged sword: if your head is long-oval, the Contour-X will feel tight front-to-back and loose at the sides — it's the wrong helmet for you, and that's worth knowing before you buy.

Shield, ventilation and everyday use

Arai's approach to the shield is different from most, and it's worth knowing before you buy. Rather than a central pivot, Arai uses side pods that let the shield sit close to the shell for its glancing-off philosophy; changing shields is a slightly more involved ritual than a Shoei's one-click swap, but the payoff is the smooth, snag-free shell profile. The visor is Pinlock-ready for fog control, ventilation is strong and highly adjustable in the Arai tradition, and the interior is fully removable, washable and — importantly for Arai — adjustable via peel-away pads so you can fine-tune the fit to your exact head. It rewards a rider who's willing to set it up properly.

On value, the Contour-X is a premium helmet at a premium price, among the dearer lids we cover. You're paying for the hand-built shell, the Snell certification, the finish and, above all, the round-oval fit — and if that fit is what your head needs, it's worth every cent, because no amount of money makes a wrong-shaped helmet comfortable. If your head is intermediate-oval, though, the same money buys a lighter, quieter Shoei RF-1400that fits you better, so the Contour-X's value is entirely conditional on your head shape. Buy it because it fits, not because it's an Arai.

Who should skip it

Long-oval heads, and anyone who wants a sun visor for commuting — the Shoei GT-Air 3is the touring answer there. And riders for whom ECE 22.06 is the deciding factor. But for a round-oval rider who wants all-day sport-touring comfort and Arai's smooth-shell approach, the Contour-X is close to unbeatable — see where it lands among the lightweight full-face picks.

Where the Contour-X sits in the range

The Contour-X is the fit specialist of the full-face field. On paper its natural rival is the Shoei RF-1400 — both premium Japanese Snell sport-touring lids — but the two rarely suit the same head: the Arai is for round-oval riders, the Shoei for intermediate-oval, which is exactly why we frame their head-to-head around shape rather than spec. Against the ECE 22.06, 5/5 SHARP AGV K6 S, the Contour-X gives up the current certification and some weight but offers a rounder, more relaxed fit that sportier helmets can't match.

The bottom line: the Contour-X is not the helmet you buy for a spec sheet — it's the one you buy because your round-oval head has been fighting every other brand, and Arai's shape finally fits. For that rider, it's worth the premium and the missing sun visor, because a helmet that fits correctly is the one whose protection you actually get.
