ECE 22.06: What Actually Changed From 22.05

The most significant rewrite of a mainstream helmet standard in a generation added rotational testing, more impact points and speeds, and the first-ever testing of visors and modular mechanisms. Here is what changed and why it matters even in the US.

ECE 22.06 is the helmet standard everyone name-drops and few can actually explain. It replaced ECE 22.05, the mark that governed European helmets for roughly two decades, and it is the most significant rewrite of a mainstream helmet standard in a generation. If you are a US buyer wondering why 22.06 keeps coming up when it is not even required here, this is what actually changed -- and why it matters even on this side of the Atlantic.

The headline change: rotational impact

The single biggest addition is a rotational, or oblique, impact test. Older standards, including 22.05, dropped helmets straight down onto anvils and measured linear deceleration -- how hard your head stops in a direct hit. But real crashes are rarely perfectly straight. You hit the pavement at an angle, and your head rotates. That rotational motion is strongly associated with brain injury, and 22.05 never measured it. ECE 22.06 strikes the helmet at an angle and measures the rotational forces transmitted to the headform. This is the same failure mode that add-on systems like MIPS were created to address; 22.06 bakes a version of that scrutiny into the standard itself.

More impacts, more points, more speeds

22.06 also tests the helmet in far more places and at more speeds than its predecessor.

  • Up to roughly 18 impact points around the shell, versus a handful under 22.05 -- including low-down points near the rim that older tests skipped.
  • Multiple impact speeds -- around 6, 7.5 and 8.2 m/s -- so the helmet has to manage both lower-energy and higher-energy hits, not a single reference speed.
  • Random-point testing, meaning labs can choose where to strike rather than only hitting pre-agreed spots a shell could be optimized around.

The practical effect is that a 22.06 helmet has to protect across a wider, less predictable range of impacts to pass, which is harder to engineer for than tuning a shell around a few known test points.

It tests the parts, not just the shell

This is the change adventure and touring riders should care about most. For the first time, ECE 22.06 tests the things attached to the helmet, not just the bare shell:

  • Flip-front (modular) mechanisms are tested, and the standard introduces P/J homologation -- P means the chin bar was tested in the closed position, J means open. Only a P/J helmet is approved to be ridden with the chin bar up.
  • Visors are tested for optical and impact performance, and drop-down sun visors are covered too.
  • Pre-fitted accessories -- the sort of built-in intercom, speaker pockets and mounts that come on modern helmets -- are assessed as part of the helmet rather than ignored.

On an adventure helmet, where the peak is a real object that can catch in a crash, or a modular touring lid where the hinge is a structural question, testing the fitted parts is a lot more than a footnote. Our full ECE 22.06 explainer goes deeper on each test.

Independently tested, not self-certified

One structural difference underpins all of this. Where DOT is self-certified -- the manufacturer declares compliance and NHTSA checks helmets after they are already on sale -- ECE 22.06 approval is granted by an independent lab before a helmet can be sold, with batch sampling and production-conformity checks so later production runs have to keep meeting the mark. That up-front, independent verification is a big part of why riders put weight on the 22.06 badge, separate from the specific new tests it adds.

The European timeline

22.06 was adopted in 2020 and applied to new type approvals from January 2021 -- meaning any newly homologated helmet model in Europe had to meet 22.06 from that point. Helmets already approved to 22.05 were given a transition period to sell through existing stock, after which European sale of new 22.05-only helmets was phased out. If you buy a current-generation helmet in Europe today, it is a 22.06 helmet.

Why 22.05 helmets are not suddenly dangerous

It is worth saying plainly: a helmet built to 22.05 did not become unsafe the day 22.06 arrived. 22.05 was a serious, independently tested standard that protected riders for two decades, and a well-fitted 22.05 helmet in good condition still does its job. What changed is the ceiling, not the floor -- 22.06 asks more questions, especially about rotational injury and the fitted parts, so a 22.06 helmet has been checked against failure modes 22.05 never looked at. If you own a recent 22.05 lid, there is no need to panic-replace it; when you do upgrade, 22.06 is the more thoroughly vetted choice.

What it means for a US buyer

Here is the twist: ECE 22.06 is not required in the United States, and many helmets sold here are built to DOT plus Snell instead. So the 22.06 rating you read about on a European review may not be on the US version of that same helmet -- and sometimes it is even sold under a different name. Before you buy on the strength of a 22.06 review, confirm the US SKU actually carries it.

The good news is that plenty of helmets do bring genuine 22.06 to the US market -- and not only the expensive ones. In the adventure category, budget polycarbonate lids carry real DOT + ECE 22.06, and so do premium carbon options. In touring, several modular helmets carry 22.06 with P/J approval. The standard is worth seeking out -- rotational testing and fitted-accessory scrutiny are real advantages -- as long as you verify it is on the helmet in your hands and not just on its European twin.
