US vs EU Helmet Certifications: Why It Is Often the Same Helmet With a Different Cert

Research a helmet by its European name and you may buy a different SKU in the US, built to a different standard. Here is why the split exists, the real examples, and how to check the label in front of you.

Spend an afternoon on adventure or sport-touring forums and you will read glowing praise for the Arai Tour-X5 and its ECE 22.06 rating. Then you walk into a US shop, pick up what looks like the same helmet, and the box says XD-5, DOT and Snell. Same lineage, different name, different certification. It is not a mistake and it is not a downgrade -- it is simply how the helmet business works across the Atlantic, and it catches a lot of sharp buyers off guard.

The short version: a helmet you research by its European name is frequently sold in the United States as a different SKU, built and homologated to a different standard. The US version and the EU version are close cousins, not identical twins. If your buying decision hinges on a specific certification -- and for a lot of riders it does -- you have to check the label on the actual helmet in front of you, not the spec sheet you read on a UK or Australian site.

Why one helmet becomes two

Two things drive the split. First, the law. In the US, the only mandatory street standard is DOT (FMVSS 218), and it is self-certified -- the manufacturer declares compliance and NHTSA spot-checks helmets after they are on sale. ECE 22.06 is not required here at all. In Europe, ECE 22.06 type approval is mandatory and is independently lab-tested before a helmet can be sold. A manufacturer building for both markets is aiming at two different legal targets.

Second, culture and preference. Snell is a US institution -- a voluntary, independently tested standard with a stiffer-shell, high-energy, repeat-impact philosophy that many American riders specifically look for. So brands like Arai and Shoei often send DOT + Snell builds to the US and ECE 22.06 builds to Europe, then give the two versions different model names so dealers, distributors and warranty systems do not get them confused. The name change is the tell that the homologation changed too.

The real examples

These are not hypotheticals. Here is how some of the most cross-shopped helmets actually split by market:

  • Arai Tour-X5 (EU) = Arai XD-5 (US). The European Tour-X5 is ECE 22.06 and scored 4/5 in SHARP testing. The US XD-5 is DOT + Snell M2025D -- a genuinely demanding standard, but not 22.06.
  • Arai Quantic (EU) = Arai Contour-X (US). Same pattern: the EU Quantic is 22.06 (SHARP 4/5), while the US Contour-X is DOT + Snell.
  • Shoei RF-1400 (US) = Shoei NXR2 (EU). Here the US name is the famous one. The US RF-1400 is DOT + Snell M2025; the European NXR2 is the ECE 22.06 build (SHARP 5/5).
  • Shoei Hornet ADV (EU) = Shoei Hornet X2 (US). The US Hornet X2 is DOT + Snell; the ADV name travels with the European homologation.
  • Shoei Neotec 3 -- same name, different cert. The Neotec 3 keeps its name on both sides of the Atlantic, but the US version is DOT while the European version is ECE 22.06 with P/J modular approval and a 5/5 SHARP score. Same badge on the box, different mark on the shell.
  • Shoei GT-Air 3 -- same name, different cert. Like the Neotec 3, the US GT-Air 3 is a DOT build while the European version is ECE 22.06 (SHARP 5/5).
  • Schuberth C5 -- same name, different cert. The US C5 is a DOT build; the European C5 is ECE 22.06 with P/J modular approval (SHARP 4/5).

That last case is the important one, because it kills the easy shortcut. You cannot assume a shared model name means a shared certification, and you cannot assume a different name means a meaningfully different helmet. The only reliable source of truth is the certification label itself.

How to read the actual label

Every legally sold street helmet carries its certification physically on the shell or strap -- you do not have to trust the marketing copy.

  • DOT:a sticker on the back of the shell reading DOT FMVSS 218. Be aware that counterfeit "novelty" DOT stickers exist on non-compliant helmets, so buy from an authorized dealer.
  • ECE 22.06: a white label sewn onto the chin strap. Look for a circled E, a country number, and an approval code beginning with 06 (the 06 is the 22.06 series; an older 05 code means the previous standard). On a modular, a P or J on that label tells you whether the chin bar was tested closed (P) or open (J).
  • Snell: a holographic Snell sticker inside the shell, reading M2025D or M2025R for the current generation.

One more trap: SHARP stars do not transfer

The UK's SHARP program rates helmets from one to five stars for impact protection, and those scores get quoted everywhere. But SHARP buys and tests the EU-spec generation of a helmet -- the ECE-approved version -- from retailers anonymously. A 5/5 SHARP score for the European NXR2 does not automatically belong to the differently-homologated US RF-1400, even though they share a lineage. Treat a SHARP star as information about the European build, not a guarantee stamped on the US one. And note the flip side: a helmet being "not listed" on SHARP does not mean it is unsafe -- SHARP only tests a subset of the market, so plenty of good helmets never get a star at all.

Should you import the European version?

Some riders who specifically want the 22.06 build track down the European SKU through an importer or an overseas retailer. It is a legitimate route, but go in clear-eyed. An imported EU helmet may not carry a US DOT sticker, which can matter for the letter of the law in some states; warranty and crash-replacement support routed through the US distributor can be harder to claim on a gray-market unit; and sizing and fit are the same regardless of which market the label came from, so you still have to try the shape on your own head. For most buyers the simpler answer is to choose a helmet whose US version already carries the certification they want -- there are more of those than there used to be.

A Snell or DOT build is not a worse helmet

This is the part riders get wrong in the other direction. Discovering that the US version is not ECE 22.06 does not mean you have been handed an inferior helmet. Snell M2025D is independently tested, uses a stiffer shell tuned for high-energy repeat impacts to the same spot, and sits well above the DOT legal floor. ECE 22.06 and Snell M2025R, by contrast, put more emphasis on rotational (oblique) injury, more impact points and more test speeds. They answer different safety questions. What matters is that you buy on purpose. If you want the rotational testing and fitted-accessory scrutiny that 22.06 is known for, make sure the US SKU actually carries it -- some do. If you trust the Snell repeat-impact philosophy, an XD-5 or RF-1400 is a deliberate, defensible choice. The mistake is not choosing Snell or choosing ECE. The mistake is thinking you bought one when the label says the other.

Often not exactly.
