Certification: both US DOT/Snell, effectively level
The US GT-Air 3 is a DOT build (the European GT-Air 3 is ECE 22.06, 5/5 SHARP). The US Contour-X is a DOT + Snell M2025 build (its European Quantic twin is ECE 22.06, 4/5 SHARP). So on the US helmets neither carries the current ECE rotational standard — the Contour-X adds Snell, the GT-Air 3 is DOT-only. If genuine US 22.06 is your priority, neither is the answer, and the AGV K6 S is. Between these two, certification is close and fit and features do the deciding.
The sun visor and comms: the GT-Air 3's territory
The GT-Air 3's drop-down internal sun visor and purpose-built Sena SRL comms are its whole pitch, and the Contour-X has neither — Arai keeps the shell clean, so you run a tinted shield or sunglasses and bolt on any comms. For a commuter or tourer who rides into low sun, the GT-Air 3 is simply the more practical daily helmet.
Fit and the shell: the Contour-X's territory
The Contour-X answers with fit. It has the roundest interiorof any full-face we cover — a genuine relief for round-oval heads that most brands pinch — and Arai's smooth, continuous shell is central to its glancing-off protection philosophy. If your head is round, the Contour-X may simply be the more comfortable helmet, and comfort is what keeps a helmet on your head over a long day.
Weight and finish
The Contour-X is the lighter of the two at around 1,530 gversus the GT-Air 3's ~1,774 g — the sun visor mechanism and touring build add mass to the Shoei. Both are impeccably finished premium helmets; the GT-Air 3 is the more feature-rich, the Contour-X the lighter and more fit-focused.
