The HJC RPHA 12 is the sport-touring helmet for the rider who wants the current certification and a genuinely light shell without paying Japanese-flagship money. It carries genuine DOT + ECE 22.06 in a PIM EVO composite shell that weighs around 1,474 g— lighter than most sport lids — with a Pinlock-ready shield and wind-tunnel aero. It's the value play in the sport full-face class.

We haven't crash-tested this helmet. The certification comes from the standards body, the specs from HJC, and the ride impressions are aggregated from owners.

Genuine ECE 22.06, and genuinely light

Two things stand out. The RPHA 12 holds genuine ECE 22.06 — the current rotational-test standard — not a DOT-only or older build. And its PIM EVO composite shell (a blend of fiberglass, carbon and aramid) keeps it to ~1,474 g, which is properly light for the class and a real neck-fatigue saving on a long day. Getting both the current standard and low weight at this price is the whole pitch.

Aero, quiet and the Pinlock-ready shield

The RPHA 12's shell was developed in the wind tunnel with a rear spoiler to cut lift, drag and noise at speed — it's aimed at the sport-touring rider who covers real miles. The HJ-42 shield is Pinlock-ready, so anti-fog is a simple insert away (see our Pinlock inserts and shields roundup). For a value helmet, the aero and anti-fog provisions are more than you'd expect.

The honest cons: no SHARP score, no sun visor

The RPHA 12 is new enough that it hasn't been SHARP-tested, so unlike the AGV K6 S it has no independent star score — the 22.06 homologation is the certification you get. And like most sport lids it has no sun visor, so you commit to a clear or tinted shield. Neither is a flaw so much as the trade for the price and the sporting focus.

Fit, ventilation and everyday use

The RPHA 12 fits HJC's usual intermediate-oval shape — the most common Western head shape — so if HJC or Shoei helmets have suited you, it likely will too. It comes in multiple shell sizes, the interior is removable and washable, and the ventilation is tuned for sport-touring: enough to keep you cool at pace without the roar of a track lid's aggressive vents. The HJ-42 shield runs smoothly and, being Pinlock-ready, sets up for fog-free cold mornings — a genuinely useful provision on a helmet you'll ride in all conditions.

On value, the RPHA 12 sits below the Japanese sport lids while carrying the current certification and a light composite shell, which is the whole pitch. You're trading the independent SHARP score and the last ounce of finish for a meaningfully lower price and the same genuine ECE 22.06. For a rider who covers real sport-touring miles and wants light weight and current certification without paying flagship money, that's an easy trade — and one earplugs (see our quiet-helmet guide) round out on the highway.

Who should skip it

Riders who want independent SHARP data (the K6 S has 5/5) or a sun visor (the GT-Air 3 has an excellent one). But for a light, genuinely-22.06 sport-touring helmet with anti-fog provision at a value price, the RPHA 12 is one of the smartest buys in the class — compare it with the Shoei default in RPHA 12 vs RF-1400.

Pros

  • Genuinely light at ~1,474 g in a PIM EVO composite shell — lighter than most sport lids
  • Genuine ECE 22.06 with a Pinlock-ready HJ-42 shield for anti-fog
  • Wind-tunnel shell and rear spoiler cut lift, drag and noise at speed

Cons

  • Not SHARP-tested, so no independent star score like an AGV K6 S
  • No sun visor — a sport lid, so you run a tinted shield or sunglasses

Don't buy this if…

you want independent SHARP data or a sun visor — the K6 S has the SHARP score, the GT-Air 3 has the sun visor.

How we picked

We do not crash-test helmets

We compiled published specifications, cited each helmet's certification (DOT, ECE 22.06, Snell, SHARP) from the standards body or manufacturer homologation, and aggregated owner reports, then scored against a published method. The scores are judgments from documented research — not measurements we took. We do not run a crash lab. Certifications reflect the US-market build; where it differs from the European version, we say so and cite it.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is the HJC RPHA 12 ECE 22.06?
Yes — the RPHA 12 carries genuine DOT + ECE 22.06, the current rotational-test standard, in its PIM EVO composite shell. It's not SHARP-tested (it's new), so there's no independent star score, but the 22.06 homologation is current and genuine.
How much does the HJC RPHA 12 weigh?
Around 1,474 g, thanks to its PIM EVO composite shell (a fiberglass, carbon and aramid blend). That's properly light for a sport-touring full-face and a real neck-fatigue saving on long rides — one of the RPHA 12's main advantages at its price.
RPHA 12 or AGV K6 S?
The RPHA 12 is lighter on the wallet and carries genuine ECE 22.06 with a Pinlock-ready shield; the AGV K6 S adds an independent 5/5 SHARP score and is a touch lighter, for more money. Choose the RPHA 12 for value and the current certification; the K6 S if independent SHARP data leads your decision.

We do not run a crash lab, and we do not pretend to. Certifications are cited to the standards body or the manufacturer's stated homologation; where a US model's certification differs from its European namesake, we say so. Where we could not verify something, we say so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out. Read our full method.
